San Lorenzo Church

La Cattedrale di San LorenzoThe church of San Lorenzo is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Genova. It was constructed between 1100 and the end of the XIV century and, since 1118 it has been consecrated to San Lorenzo. The solemn façade is decorated according to the gothic Genovese style, characterised by black and white horizontal stripes, it has two towers at its sides; the highest tower is the church’s bell tower.

The inside of the cathedral is characterised by three magnificent naves adorned with numerous frescoes and paintings that date from several artistic currents and from different eras. From the left nave it is possible to access the Museum of San Lorenzo’s treasure. It is small and precious and has the extraordinary charm of a casket filled with history, art and devotion. On a floor that is below the ground level of the archbishopric courtyard the museum displays masterpieces in gold and silver (from the IX century to the modern day) on loan from the Cathedral of Genova along with several of its precious historical documents.

A few metres from the cathedral, in Via Tommaso Reggio, the chapel of the Canonici of San Lorenzo hosts the splendid Diocesan Museum.
