Rolli Palaces
“Genova: the Strade Nuove and the Palazzi dei
Rolli system”, from 13 July they are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and they form an urban context consisting principally in two modern residential axes, the so called “Strade Nuove” (via Garibaldi and via
Balbi), built by the major noble families who constructed their homes on the outskirts of the historic centre in two successive periods (XVI-XVII centuries).
The Strade Nuove, which are an extraordinary example of noble residential apportionment because of the uniformity of the urban systems and the architectural characteristics of the palaces, have remained at the centre of the modern day city, positioned as a hinge between the medieval streets in the south and the infrastructure for modern traffic in the north, they are the most important fragment of the 1500-1600’s ring.
What are the Rolli?
The new architectural models were imitated within the historic centre with the construction of numerous palaces, creating a peculiar noble residential system, which was made official in 1576 with a decree by the Senate which published an official list of the palaces that were obliged to host visits from the State (list of public or Rolli accommodation), and which recognised their particular prestige.
The area included in the UNESCO inscription thus extends to a part of the historic centre, which crosses via Lomellini, piazza Fossatello and via San Luca, reaching
piazza Banchi, the commercial heart of the historic city: in this stretch there are some of the best examples of the Rolli palaces built in the modern age on a medieval fabric.
