Royal Palace

Foto Palazzo RealeEntering this palace which is located in Via Balbi – known as the university street- makes it possible to experience a visit to a museum-residence from the 1700-1800’s in which all the internal decorations have been conserved and are intact: frescoes, paintings and tapestries.

The palace, built between 1620 and 1670 for the powerful Balbi family (already involved in the planning and construction processs of other buildings in the street which bear their name), in 1820 was sold to the Savoys who used it as their official residence.

In 1919 the Royal palace became State property.

This historical abode is enriched by the splendid garden in front of it which was once connected directly to the pier of the port with the Royal bridge; removed in 1964 when the raised highway was constructed.
Today it is a museum complex made up of the villa, the adjoining garden, and the Royal palace gallery, one of the main art galleries in the city.
