Scientific objectives
- Collect, harmonise and improve data about the past (2000-2010) hydro-meteorological disasters (droughts and floods) in selected river basins in Germany , Belgium , Spain and Italy ,
- Harmonise practices and methodological approaches for risk assessment, particularly the economic and social effects of disasters, therefore improve the evidence-base for disaster risk prevention,
- Describe the factors which amplify or attenuate disaster's impact (vulnerability and resilience), and which are of direct importance for practical risk management,
- Examine the effectiveness of the preventive measures in place, and show potential for improvement,
- Identify, share and disseminate best practice of disaster impact's assessment, based on the results of EC research projects.
Expected results
- A catalogues of hydro-meteorological disasters (droughts and floods) in the selected river basins in Spain , Italy , Germany and Belgium , and their basic characterisation.
- A set of pilot studies, consisting of
- comprehensive and harmonised data sets describing the direct, indirect and intangible effects of major disasters;
- assessment of full economic and social costs incurred due to these disasters, along with the identification of major drivers;
- detailed assessment of preventive measures in place when the disaster occurred.
- Elaborated Guidance document and Best Practice Report for data collection and assessment of disasters' impacts.
- Policy and capacity building workshop involving the representatives of the river basin authorities and staff members of the civil protection agencies in the participating countries and river basins. Online training module on disaster risk assessment and prevention.
