WP 8 Scientific coordination

Objectives

This workpackage concentrates on the scientific coordination of PLANETS. It is meant to ensure the harmonization of the research objectives undertaken by each partner. Scientific results of all models and technology assessments will also be coordinated so to allow the maximum research returns of the project. A crucial component is to ensure a close scientific dialogue between the partners in this research project, as well as interaction with the Commission in order to maximize the policy relevance of the proposed project.

Description of work

Task 8.1: Scientific coordination

Partners: ECN and FEEM

This task ensures the harmonization and coherence of all research undertakings of PLANETS. Various subsequent steps are foreseen to guarantee the consistency of the project scientific contents. Initially, a detailed research plan is produced in agreement with all project partners. Subsequently, the research results produced in each task are monitored and coordinated in such a way as to ensure adherence to the project scientific objectives. The relevance for the EU will be constantly ensured by properly tuning the research and policy analyses with the Commission in Brussels as well as with global energy and environmental policies as these will unfold over the time of the project. This task will be coordinated by ECN, with close assistance of FEEM.

Task 8.2: Models combination

Partners: ECN and FEEM

Once baseline assumptions have been agreed upon, it is important to investigate how each of our 6 models reacts to them. We will perform this comparative analysis in a mixing procedure, i.e. by a visualisation of a number of key variables across the 6 different models. The variables are chosen such as to have direct European and global policy pertinence, as well as corresponding academic and analytical relevance. In the next phase, a mixing of the models will be applied to a series of carefully chosen climate and energy policies, which will be similarly imposed on scenario runs with each of the 6 different models. That is, from a mix of models and their behaviour under certain uniform policy instruments, an uncertainty range is obtained for a range of environmental and economic variables, providing necessary depth and insight for the robustness of policy measures that are today being implemented as well as suggested for implementation in the near and farther future. In the light of the objectives of PLANETS, each of the 6 models will have to be subjected to certain specific model updates and upgrading, in order to create variables that are inter-model comparable.

Task 8.3: Workshops

Partners: ECN and FEEM

This task deals with the scientific coordination of the project meetings, as these will constitute an essential means to interact between the partners, to harmonize the research findings, to agree on general conclusions that are shared by all modelling exercises, and to discuss the instances at which models may come up with differing results and views on specific energy or environmental modelling issues or findings. ECN will ensure that the sequence of workshops will constitute a scientific and balanced whole, and will be helped herein by FEEM.

Workpackage 8 is carried out under the co-ordination of ECN
