Paulo A.L.D. Nunes (Ph.D. in Economics
at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium) joins FEEM in 2000
and he is currently the Head of the Ecosystems and Biodiversity Economics
Division. He is also Professor of Environmental Valuation at the School
for Advanced Studies in Venice Foundation of the Venice International
University.
His main areas of expertise include economic valuation of environmental
goods; cost-benefit analysis; econometrics of non-market valuation;
economics of marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems; social dimension
of biodiversity conservation; the role of ecosystem services in promoting
poverty alleviation; scaling-up ecosystem services values to macro-economic
dimensions; impacts of climate change and ecosystem effects on human
wellbeing, welfare analysis and policy guidance.
In the recent years, Nunes has contributed with his technical expertise
to a wide set of international initiatives, including, for example,
The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) initiative,
coordinated by the European Commission and UNDP; the Costs of
Policy Action (COPI) quantitative assessments (both action I
and action II), coordinated by the European Commission; scaling-up
ecosystem services values, initiative coordinated by the European
Environmental Agency; the Social Dimension of Biodiversity, initiative
coordinated by the European Commission; the development of an operative
framework for corporate ecosystem valuation, initiative coordinated
by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and with
the technical support of the IUCN; and, Ocean Health Index initiative,
coordinated by Conservation International. Nunes is also author or
coauthor of 50+ scientific publications in a variety of international
journals. His most recent book is Bioeconomic Modelling, Valuation
and Stakeholder Analysis for Sustainable Management of Exploited Marine
Ecosystems.
