Dr. Celia A. Harvey is Vice President of Global Change and Ecosystem Services at Conservation International and has 15 years of international experience working in biodiversity conservation, climate change (both adaptation and mitigation) and tropical forestry. As leader of the Global Change and Ecosystem Services department, Dr. Harvey is responsible for formulating the strategic direction, goals and implementation of a science agenda that focuses on understanding systemic threats to biodiversity, analyzing opportunities for harnessing ecosystem service benefits to society, and supporting science-based decision-making approaches for integrating biodiversity conservation and human well-being. Together with her staff of 20 scientists, she leads innovative research on climate change adaptation, climate change mitigation, land use change and deforestation trends in biodiversity hotspots and wilderness areas, and integrated approaches for linking ecosystem services to human wellbeing in conservation landscapes. She also plays a key role in the institutional climate change team, providing science-based support to policy, markets and field implementation activities.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Harvey was the leader of the Climate Change Initiatives Program at Conservation International and was directly responsible for developing and implementing a diverse portfolio of Forest Carbon Projects (in 12 tropical countries), building regional and partner capacity in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, providing scientific and technical support to ecosystem adaptation initiatives and forest carbon projects, and providing high-level support to emerging national REDD programs. Before joining CI, Dr. Harvey was a Professor in Tropical Agroforestry and Biodiversity Conservation at CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) in Costa Rica, where she led the Master’s program in Tropical Agroforestry and conducted field research on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services in fragmented landscapes, with a focus on integrated landscape management. Dr. Harvey is an internationally-recognized scientist, with 19 articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, 19 book chapters, and >60 technical articles. She is also the co-editor of two books: ‘Agroforestry and Biodiversity Conservation in Tropical Landscapes’ (Island Press, 2004), and ‘Evaluación y Conservación de Biodiversidad en Paisajes Fragmentados de Mesoamérica’ (INBio 2008). She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from Cornell University and a B.S. from Stanford University.
