Ferdinando Villa has a Ph.D. in theoretical Ecology and a background in Computer Science. After working in many fields of Ecology, from theoretical island biogeography to marine protected area planning, he has concentrated on ecoinformatics, with a special attention to the application of artificial intelligence techniques to spatially-explicit assessment, valuation, and modelling of ecosystem services. He has also been involved in modelling the decision process and worked with NGOs and governments to produce decision support systems to help sound and sustainable environmental decision-making. He is the leader of the ARIES project, one of the most innovative toolkits to assess the physical flows of ecosystem services and estimate their economic values. He has authored 100+ publications and open source software packages, and is the recipient of several million USD in federal research grants. Ferdinando has just returned to Europe after a 15-year career in the United States.
