INSTRUCTORS Giorgio Andrian, UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe
Initially trained in forestry and environmental sciences - at the University of Padua and the University of California-Berkeley - Giorgio Andrian worked for few years in sustainable forestry and rural development projects in Africa (Ghana) and Central America (Costa Rica). More recently, he moved to Europe to continue his academic career, entering doctoral studies in political geography at the University of Freiburg (German). Parallel to that, he began to cooperate with a EU funded project on environmental economics (the project 'ENARECO', carried out in partnership with the Universities of Padua, Freiburg, Gent and L'viv), developing models for evaluating the effectiveness of environmental policies in countries in transition. Since 2004, he joined UNESCO, former staff and
current consultant, dealing with the environmental programme in South-East
Europe; namely, the Man and Biosphere Programme and its World Network
of Biosphere Reserves and the World Heritage Convention (with particular
emphasis on the natural sites and cultural landscapes). Parallel to
the professional engagement in the UN system - he developed a regional
cooperation framework called Dinaric Arc Initiative' to foster innovative
inter-agencies cooperation models - he continued his researches in
the environmental governance in relation with local territorial development.
He has published some 30 articles and edited
two books in environmental policy and protected areas related issues.
He is visiting professor at various universities (Freiburg, Padua,
